To begin what we anticipate what will be a lengthy and fruitful study in The Acts According to the Apostles, our first teaching on Acts was a comprehensive overview of the book, examining its authorship, biography of Luke, date of when it was written, its title, its addressee, its audience, and its purpose. We then considered several other characteristics of Luke’s narrative, spending some time on uniform elements found within the speeches/sermons in Acts. Acts 1:8 is the key verse: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
An outline for the book was given along with a lengthy list of key events that take place in Luke’s writing. We then listed several theological topics that will come up throughout the study of the book … topics that are weighty and carry great significance in our understanding of the Christian faith and practice. The teaching concluded with reading the end of The Gospel According to Luke (Luke 24:36-53) and the beginning of The Acts According to the Apostles (Acts 1:1-5).
